Membership Details

The society was formed in 1987 to record the past and present history of the town for future generations and historians. Our large archive of donated photographs, documents and maps-well over 4000 items-has outgrown the Centre and is now maintained by Bury Metro Borough Council  at the Bury Museum and Archive, Moss St, Bury BL9 0DG   0161 273 6782.  Joanne Fitton is the Archivist

The Heritage Society unfortunately does not have an Archivist at present, as our Archivist has recently retired and we have not yet found a replacement with specific local history knowledge who might be able to spend time researching

We therefore are unable to spend any time researching any Family trees or history of houses e.t.c. although if there are requests these can be asked at the monthly meetings when one or more members may be able to help. The local Family History Society is based in Preston. Contact Vicky Barlow, Bob's Ley, 6 Mowbreck Lane, Wesham, Preston, Lancs PR4 3HA.

The Institute of Local and Family History, part of the University of Central Lancashire also run courses on using the internet to research Family trees. See the website www.localand familyhistory.com

The area of our interest is defined by the limits of old ( pre 1947) Ramsbottom Urban District Council-Eden field, Holcombe, Holcombe Brook, Ramsbottom, Shuttleworth, Stubbinss, Summerseat and Turn, though anyone, whether living in this area or exiled  further afield is welcome to join the Society. Benefits include a free twice yearly news magazine and full programme information.

We are an active society and in addition to monthly  meetings with speakers on subjects connected to the area, we organise guided walks, encourage members and others to record the present time by photographic changes in the town for the annual photographic competition, to research the past ( and if possible publish the findings) and to tape record the memories of our older citizens.
